Seller’s permit obtained

How this closesHand in your document — Submitting it closes this step. We keep a copy for your record — we never file or submit anything for you.

Why this matters

If you sell physical goods in California, the state requires you to collect sales tax, and you cannot legally do that without a seller permit.

Operating without one can mean back taxes and penalties on sales you have already made. It is also the document wholesalers ask for before they will sell to you at trade prices, so not having one blocks work well beyond tax.

Before you start

CDTFA asks for more than people expect. Have ready:

  • Valid photo ID: driver licence or passport
  • Your SSN or ITIN
  • An email address
  • Your supplier names and addresses
  • Personal references
  • Your bookkeeper or accountant contact details, if you have one
  • Projected monthly sales, projected taxable sales, and what you sell

Registration itself is free. CDTFA may require a security deposit in some cases. Not yet confirmed by LAEDC.

The system saves your progress, but partially completed applications are deleted after 30 days. Finish within a month of starting.

The rest of this step is for LAEDC clients

The steps themselves, the questions worth asking Pathfinder, where to send your document, and who to call when you get stuck. An account is free, it keeps your progress, and it connects you to an advisor who works with businesses like yours.
