How this closesWork through it with Pathfinder — Pathfinder writes this with you and saves it to your record.

Why this matters

Reviewers decline far more applications for being unreadable than for being unworthy. They work a queue, under a deadline, and they are looking for a reason to move on. An application that answers a different question from the one asked, or that leaves an obvious risk unmentioned, gives them that reason in under a minute.

The flip side is that this is one of the few parts of funding entirely within your control. You cannot change your credit history this month. You can absolutely change whether your package answers what was asked, in the funder’s own words, with the risks named before they are found.

Before you start

Run the five pre-application checks first, honestly, because all five have to pass and a package built before they do is wasted work.

  1. Are you eligible? Read the actual criteria, not the headline. Entity type, location, trading history, size, industry, use of funds. Most declines at this stage are owners who hoped a criterion was flexible.
  2. Are you compliant? Registrations current, licences valid, taxes filed, entity in good standing with the state. A lapsed filing stops an otherwise strong application dead.
  3. Are your numbers ready? Financial statements, tax returns, debt schedule. The earlier steps in this domain.
  4. Is your story clear? Can you say in four sentences what the business does, what the money is for, what it produces, and how it is repaid?
  5. Can you deliver what the funder wants? If the programme exists to create jobs and your project creates none, you are applying to the wrong programme, however good the business is.
