Corridor Development

Grow an industry. Grow a community with it.

A corridor is a part of LA County where an industry is ready to grow. We bring everything that industry needs into one place, from capital and sites to suppliers and trained workers, so the jobs, contracts and ownership it creates stay in the neighborhood.

01 · What a corridor is

A corridor is an industry and a place, growing together.

Most economic development works one business at a time. That matters, and our Business Services Network does it every day. But a single business grows faster when the block around it is growing too: when the customers, suppliers, workers, lenders and landlords it needs are all close by.

So we also work at the scale of a whole corridor. We pick an industry and a place that are ready for each other, and we line up the partners who can make that growth happen, on purpose and all at once.

An industry

Healthcare, the creative economy, aerospace, or the rebuild after a disaster. Something with real demand and room to grow.

A place

A set of neighborhoods and cities with the land, the people and the momentum to host that growth.

The partners who move it

Banks, major buyers, property owners, cities, colleges and community groups, all at the same table.

02 · Industry cluster development

We grow industry clusters, on purpose.

An industry cluster is a group of related businesses that get stronger by being close together. At the center are the anchors, the big employers and buyers. Around them are the suppliers and service companies that sell to them, the schools that train their workers, the lenders that finance them, the buildings they work from, and the public partners who clear the way.

LA already knows how this works. Hollywood is a cluster. So is aerospace in the South Bay. Corridor development is how we help the next clusters grow in the places that are ready for them, with local businesses and local workers in every ring.

In the South LA Healthcare Corridor, the cluster grows around the MLK Medical Campus and the health centers that already serve 1.3 million residents.

Customers close by

When a hospital or a studio buys from the supplier down the street, that supplier grows, hires and buys from its own neighbors.

Workers trained for real jobs

Colleges and training programs teach for the jobs the cluster is actually creating, so residents step straight into them.

Dollars that stay local

Every contract, paycheck and lease kept inside the corridor gets spent again in the same neighborhoods, and builds local ownership.

03 · Where we're working

Five corridors, each at its own stage.

Three corridors are forming their consortiums now. Two more are taking shape. Here is what each one is building, and where it stands today.

04 · How a corridor gets built

Six steps, from first look to lasting growth.

Every corridor follows the same path. The community sets the direction, partners bring the resources, and businesses grow because the pieces they need are finally in one place.

  1. 1
    Assess

    Know what's there.

A corridor health assessment maps the businesses, buyers, sites, talent and capital already in place, what is missing, and where dollars are leaving the neighborhood.

  2. 2
    Listen

Let the community name the vision.

Residents, business owners and community groups say what they want their corridor to become. That vision sets the outcomes every partner works toward.

  3. 3
    Convene

Bring the right partners to the table.

Seven consortiums bring the lenders, major buyers, property owners, cities, colleges, health plans and community groups who control what the corridor needs.

This is where you come in
  4. 4
    Build

Make it easy for businesses to say yes.

Together, the consortiums put the pieces in place: capital ready to lend, sites ready to lease, a faster path through permits, and contracts open to local suppliers.

  5. 5
    Grow

    Attract, launch and expand businesses.

We bring new businesses in and help the ones already here grow, with free advising, courses and tools from our Business Services Network.

  6. 6
    Measure

Count every win, and share it.

A corridor health index tracks dollars deployed, businesses opened, jobs filled and money kept local, so every partner sees what their contribution made possible.

Where we are now: the Healthcare, Altadena and Palisades corridors are at step 3. Their consortiums are forming this fall, founding members are announced December 9, and the work kicks off in late January.

05 · Get involved

The next step is a seat at the table.

Consortiums are working groups where organizations that shape a corridor, from lenders and hospitals to cities and community groups, design solutions together. Each one has room for about 15 members, and the founding seats are open now. Member agreements are due November 30.
